Nyungwe Conservancy

The proposed Nyungwe Conservancy would build a wider conservation economy around Rwanda’s spectacular Nyungwe forest landscape, one of Africa’s most important montane rainforest ecosystems and a stronghold for chimpanzees, primates and exceptional biodiversity.

By strengthening the relationship between the protected forest and neighbouring communities, the initiative could support ecological restoration, sustainable livelihoods, conservation enterprise and high-value nature tourism. The ambition would be to ensure that the communities surrounding Nyungwe become active beneficiaries and custodians of the forest’s extraordinary natural capital.
