Margaret Muruiki
Description
I am a tourism lecturer at Karatina University, where I teach aspiring tourism managers how to develop tourism that delivers lasting benefits to local communities. For more than a decade, my research has focused on human wildlife conflict and the ways tourism revenue can help communities meet the costs of living alongside wildlife.
I believe people should be at the heart of conservation and tourism, not treated as an afterthought. Community-based conservation must avoid reproducing inequalities in the tourism and conservation sectors. Local people need meaningful partnerships and opportunities to take part in tourism enterprises as owners and managers, so they can shape development, benefit from it, and lead conservation efforts.
My vision is of an Africa that develops sustainably, protects its natural resources, and contributes to addressing climate change. I am passionate about a world where people live in harmony with nature, cultures are respected, and resources are shared more equitably.
