Ankarafantsika Conservancy

The Ankarafantsika National Park Conservancy is proposed as a flagship Madagascar pilot for the National Park Conservancy model advocated by Rewilding Africa CIC and its Global National Parks Campaign. The concept is to establish a “Thrive Buffer” around Ankarafantsika National Park, connecting the protected area with surrounding communities, agricultural landscapes, water resources, wildlife corridors and sustainable economic opportunities. Developed in collaboration with Madagascar National Parks (MNP), government authorities, local communities and traditional leaders, NGOs, conservation partners and responsible private-sector investors, the Conservancy would create a coordinated landscape platform in which conservation and community prosperity reinforce one another.

Phase 1 would establish and launch the Ankarafantsika destination brand, build international awareness and develop the stakeholder and market platform required to attract support and investment. Phase 2 would translate this momentum into a comprehensive programme of natural-resource assessment, community land-use planning, zoning and governance, sustainable tourism and concession development, community enterprise, impact investment, landscape restoration and long-term conservancy management. The ambition is to demonstrate that a thriving community landscape can become the strongest long-term protection for a thriving national park, creating a scalable model for Madagascar and other protected landscapes across Africa.
