Kafue Conservancy

The Kafue Conservancy project aims to be the proof of concept required to develop National Park Conservancies on the land defined as GMA’s around the national parks in Zambia.

Building Africa’s great wilderness destination beyond the park boundary.

Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s great wilderness landscapes.

Its extraordinary scale, wildlife diversity and relatively low-density wilderness character provide the foundations for a potentially world-class conservation and tourism destination.

The proposed Kafue National Park Conservancy seeks to build upon those foundations by creating a coordinated landscape around the national park.

The Conservancy concept would bring together surrounding communities, Game Management Areas, private-sector interests, conservation organisations, tourism operators and government stakeholders within a common spatial and economic framework.

The objective is not to change the statutory management of Kafue National Park.

It is to strengthen the wider landscape in which Kafue exists.

Through coordinated land-use planning, wildlife corridors, community conservation, tourism development, nature-positive enterprise and responsible investment, the National Park Conservancy could create a much larger conservation economy while strengthening the park’s long-term ecological and economic resilience.

Kafue has the potential to become a flagship demonstration of how one of Africa’s great wilderness parks can become the anchor of a much larger, community-inclusive conservation destination.

The Kafue Conservancy will:

Protect and reconnect one of Africa’s great remaining wilderness landscapes.

Create tangible economic opportunities from conservation, tourism and sustainable natural-resource enterprises.

Improve landscape connectivity between the national park and surrounding conservation areas.

Position Kafue as a globally recognised community led conservation destination.

Create a structured pipeline of conservation, tourism and nature-positive investment opportunities.

Develop a model that can ultimately be applied around other Zambian national parks and Game Management Areas.
