The proposed Sumu Lame Burra Conservancy would create a landscape-scale conservation and community development framework around the Sumu Wildlife Sanctuary and the wider Sumu Lame–Burra landscape in northern Nigeria. The opportunity is to connect wildlife habitat with surrounding communities through coordinated land-use planning, habitat restoration, sustainable agriculture, community conservation and nature-based enterprise.
By developing tourism and other sustainable economic opportunities alongside stronger wildlife protection, the Conservancy could help transform the landscape from one facing increasing pressure on natural resources into a community-led conservation economy, providing a potential model for restoring Nigeria’s remaining wildlife landscapes while creating tangible benefits for local people.
